This week Governor Charlie Baker revealed the state’s current budget deficit, adding more than $200 million to his original half a billion dollar estimate.

Baker previously said administrative actions such as the recent hiring freeze would make up most of the cost, but pledged not to cut local aid.

Baker filled the last opening in his cabinet on Wednesday after naming Daniel Bennett as Secretary of Public Safety.

Bennett, who was the former senior Worcester County  assistant district attorney, was voted as a 2013 Prosecutor of the Year by the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association.

State Senator Vinny DeMacedo of Plymouth was named the ranking Republican member on the Senate Ways and Means Committee — a position DeMacedo also held in the House.

Massachusetts’ unemployment rate last month dropped three-tenths a percentage point to 5.5 percent, at the same time adding nearly 11,000 jobs, which is the strongest annual job growth since 2000.
