FreeCycle Kingston
FreeCycle is a worldwide organization
dedicated to the fine art of giving. Members post free items that are still
usable, serviceable or just no longer needed. Others contact the person making
the offer, and someone ends up with the item or items. It's a win-win for all as
most items stay in circulation rather than collecting dust or ending up in the
landfill. Some of the most popular items posted are baby items, such as
strollers, clothing, and toys. Members may also post limited "wanted" requests,
where fellow "FreeCyclers" request items that someone may have no further need
for. To sign up for the free service, follow the links below. You may need a
free Yahoo account to join.

Garden Tips
Grub Control
Those C-shaped, white grubs
that you find when digging soil in late summer and early fall are the
larvae form of the Japanese beetles that cause so much devastation in mid summer.
The grubs feed on roots, and can completely shear off grass roots leaving the
blades to die. The brown patches of grass caused by these grubs are often
mistaken for dog urine spots. To tell the difference, see if the grass can be
easily lifted from the soil. If the problem is white grubs, the roots will be
sheared and the grass will not be anchored.

Locks of Love Touches Children
Unless you've been living on a
deserted island, you most certainly have heard of an organization that makes
hairpieces for children called Locks of Love. Locks of Love was founded in 1997
by a retired cardiac nurse named Madonna Coffman, who developed Alopecia from a
hepatitis vaccination at the age of 20.
At the age of 35 Mrs.Coffman switched her efforts to full-time due to the stress
and struggle of dealing with Alopecia once more. This time it was her 4 year old
daughter who was affected and the situation was heartbreaking. During its first
year of operation, 21 hairpieces were produced. Now, over a thousand hairpieces
will be made for children all of ages.
Most hairpieces are made for children who lose all of their hair due to Alopecia
Areata, which has no known cure. Over eighty percent of donations are made by
other children. Some hair salons offer free haircuts to anyone who donates at
least ten inches of hair, but anyone can cut your hair as long as the donation
guidelines are followed. Hair must be bundled in a ponytail or braid. It needs
to be clean, dry, placed in a plastic bag and then a padded envelope.
Locks of Love needs hair from men and women, young and old, all colors and
races. Hair can be colored and/or permed, but not bleached or chemically
damaged. Hair that is short, gray, or unsuitable for children will be separated
and sold at fair market value to offset the cost of manufacturing.
If you are not able to donate your hair, the organization needs financial
donations as well as volunteer help to keep providing hairpieces for every child
that needs one. Please consider offering your support to this fine cause.
For more information on Locks of Love, how to donate hair, how to find a salon
that offers free haircuts to donors, how to sign up to volunteer for Locks of
Love, or applying to receive a hairpiece, please go to
