FOG HORNS CONVERTED TO “NEWER TECHNOLOGY”

Hundreds of New Englanders are sounding the alarm over the Coast Guard’s plan to convert foghorns to a newer technology. The Coast Guard is converting all the foghorns that are now automated to activate in the presence of fog to be activated by mariners via their marine radios. Mariners go to channel 81 on their VHF radios and key their microphone 5 consecutive times. If they are within two miles of the fog horn it will sound. The Coast Guard said the conversions will cost $800 to $1,000 per foghorn which is “far less expensive than maintenance of a system that the Coast Guard no longer supports.” So far the change is very unpopular.

THAILAND USES “SLAVES IN SEAFOOD INDUSTRY”

The U.S. State Department has downgraded Thailand to a Tier 3 trafficking nation designation, indicating that the country has not done enough to curb the ongoing human rights problems in a number of industries, including its seafood industry.
