Plymouth: Town given ultimatum by DEP on cleanup of former landfill

Plymouth town officials are on notice by the DEP to come to an agreement with the County to clean up contaminated County-owned property on South St., a site previously operated as a landfill by the town, or else the state agency will decide who is responsible and who pays for it.

Town Manager Melissa Arrighi says County and town officials have been talking about this for some time—a project that town meeting has committed to, “which is the mitigation and clean-up of gas migration and solid waste material—rubbish—that is in the Police Station parking lot. The town intends to move forward over the next couple of weeks with digging out that parking lot and cleaning up that site entirely so that there’s no longer any gas migration toward that Police Station.”
