Sears in Kingston closing in January

KINGSTON – It is one of two Massachusetts stores operated by Sears Holdings Corp. being closed as part of the company’s continuing cost cutting. The company owns Sears and Kmart stores.

The Kmart in Milford closed at the beginning of this month.

The Kingston store’s 73 employees will receive severance and have the chance to apply for employment at other local Sears or Kmart stores, Sears spokesman Howard Riefs said.

A liquidation sale at the Kingston store will begin Oct. 31

About 130 leased and owned Sears stores nationwide either have already closed this year or will be closing by year’s end, according to Sears Holding’s second-quarter earnings report.

The retailer has shifted emphasis to its online Shop Your Way, which accounted for 73 percent of Sears’ transactions and sales, Riefs said.

Sears also has stores at the Hanover Mall and South Shore Plaza, and there are a number of Kmart stores in the region, including one in Braintree.
